Finish Options for Cable Railing Systems

Jump to Section:

A cable railing system is a collection of individual components that are assembled to make a complete railing frame and infill. There are many ways to accomplish this; and even more ways to finish the material. In order to keep it simple we will discuss a few of the most popular material and finish options for cable railing systems. Because cable and glass railings utilize similar framing systems; these options can apply to both railing types.

4 Popular Finish Options for Cable Railing Systems

Mirror or Polished Finish– A polished finish is a common stainless steel treatment that leaves the metal reflective like a mirror. It is a durable and attractive look on metal, however it can be unforgiving when damaged. Mirror finish has been used on sailboat railings and hardware for many decades because of the durability it offers. From a cost standpoint, a mirror finish is on the more expensive side of steel finishes.

Oils, Stains and Painted Finishes– When we talk about a stained finish we are almost always referring to a wooden product. Stains and oils preserve the natural woodgrain look with varying levels of tint and transparency. In addition, a penetrating oil or paint will extend the lifespan and add to the durability of wood products. It’s important to select specific wood finishes for different types of soft and hardwoods. Some are more difficult to penetrate and softer woods may require more coats. Hardwoods and hardwood finishes are preferred for cable railing applications.

Powder Coated Finishes- One of the most common finishes for exterior metals is a powder coated finish. In short, powder coat is a high temperature baked on shell that preserves and protects metal surfaces. Powder coating is versatile and cost effective, with hundreds of colors to choose from. A powder coated finish can be smooth or textured with multiple sheen variants available.

Mill Finish and Knock Down Finishes– If you like the look of smooth bare metal then a mill finish is a great choice. Mill finishes are smooth and clean, but without sheen, consistent grain or polish. Sometimes mill finishes may contain swirls by design or they be graded by a grit number. The higher the number, the smoother the finish. Mill finished steel can also be clear coated if desired.
