Is Plexiglass a Good Choice for Outdoor Railings?

Jump to Section:

When it comes to transparent building products we have a good number of product choices; one of them being plexiglass. Plexiglass has been utilized for years as a cost effective and “see through” option for skylights, fences, windows, railings etc. Because of the safety and durability aspect, plexiglass is a staple in many industries; however it has some drawbacks when it comes to outdoor construction. In this article we will review why plexiglass is not our preferred choice for fencing and railings. We will also explore some applications best suited for plexiglass and acrylic materials.

Why You Shouldn’t use Plexiglass for Fences and Railings

  • Plexiglass is not resistant to some household cleaners

Despite the hundreds of products and uses for plexiglass; it is not resistant to abrasives and can be damaged by household products like windex. In comparison tempered glass panels can be cleaned without fear of degradation and will not be softened or scratched by cleaning products. Glass fences and railings need to be durable and extremely transparent in order to provide value and years of enjoyment.

  • When compared to tempered glass, plexiglass panels are not as resistant to UV rays.

Through the years we’ve visited several housing tracks and golf course communities with plexiglass panels used as perimeter fencing. The main goal of these panels is to deflect errant shots and protect patios without disturbing views. Aesthetically, many of the panels we’ve seen are either yellowing or milky in color. Although they do allow light to pass through, the view diminishes as the years go by.  Panels with larger spans tend to deflect and warp which is not a clean look.

  • Plastic products like plexiglass can be difficult to recycle and plastic is not a bio degradable option.

Although this is not necessarily a durability problem, using plastic can be  a problem for the environment and anyone interested in green building practices. Plastic creation releases toxic gasses and fumes.  In comparison, tempered glass and stainless steel cable are re-useable and easier to recycle than plastic. 1/8″ Stainless steel cable is almost transparent when used for railings and has a lifespan of 30-50 years outdoors.

Preferred Uses for Plexiglass in Construction Applications

Plexiglass is a great choice when cost and safety are priorities but transparency is not. For example; building a greenhouse can be extremely expensive using all glass construction. Plastic panels and/or acrylic products can be a great option for situations where light transmission is more important than transparency. Examples of other preferable applications for using plexiglass are as follows:

  • Skylights- A good example of when more light is desired but not necessarily transparency.
  • Clear Partitions- Partition walls at businesses like banks, stores or service stations often use plexiglass. It provides the desired separation with less cost than glass and can be argued to be safer than tempered glass.
  • Patio Covers- Plexiglass or polycarbonate panels can be used for a dry solution to patio roofs without blocking light. A good option for covered patios where light is desired for growing plants.
