There are many different post configurations possible when considering a cable railing layout. One thing we get a lot of inquiries about is the use of 2 posts vs. a single post to turn corners. Why do cable railing systems use 2 posts when turning corners?
-Quite simply a 2 post corner allows for a continuous cable to turn a corner without stopping and starting a new run. As illustrated in the photo above; the cables continue around the corner at a 45 degree angle through the posts.
Are there benefits to using 2 posts vs. 1 post?
-From a cost standpoint there are benefits to using 2 posts to turn a corner. The double post corner reduces the amount of necessary hardware that comes with breaking a cable run at a single corner post. Aesthetically, the preference is really up to the individual. Some customers like to see hardware or minimize the post count. Others prefer to minimize the hardware or the cost outweighs the aesthetic preference.

Which type of corner post design is stronger?
-For a number of reasons the 2 post corner creates a stronger frame and connection. Using two posts will distribute the tension load over more surface area with twice the number of connections to the subfloor.
A single post will actually experience twice the tension load in different directions when 2 separate runs of cable terminate on a single post corner.
Which applications are good choices for a single post vs. two post corner?
-Small spaces and interior railings will often benefit from, or even require the use of single posts. The photo above is a great illustration of a single post application. Another example could be a small “L” or “U” shaped section with short sides that would be cumbersome with too many posts.
– Large decks and fences will more often utilize two posts in an effort to span single cables as far as possible to reduce cost. A double post can also be an effective way to break and start a new cable run when large spans exist and the installer must break the cable.
