Transparent railings minimize the amount of vertical and horizontal obstructions that can impede your views. This is accomplished in several ways; minimizing post counts and/or sizing is one method. Another way to design more transparent railings is by removing or minimizing the top railing member. Material selection and color choices can also contribute largely to the transparency of each railing system. In this post we will review some of the available choices consumers can utilize for the most transparent railings. Transparent Railing Materials For Selected Applications Stainless steel cable railing systems and glass railings are currently the most popular options for maximizing views outside. The last few years have seen a tremendous increase for these railings inside as well. Which one is right for your application? Consider the following factors about each railing type: Glass Panel Railings Glass railing systems provide excellent wind resistance, as well as transparency Low maintenance on components, but regular panel cleaning is needed outside to maintain transparency Extremely durable, great lifespan Cost factors can be high; glass systems without top railings may require laminated glass Harder to DIY If a windbreak is needed, glass is hard to beat. Tempered glass panels work great for outdoor dining areas, fire pit seating and poolside applications where wind is an issue. Cable Railing System Transparency Stainless cable is extremely transparent and when paired with the right framing system it is a very effective infill for maximizing views. Ultra slim spreader posts and minimal top railing profiles can combine for invisible railing frames. Here are some other important points to consider about cable railings: Cable railings are extremely low maintenance There are no panels to clean; however there is no wind resistance with these systems Cable railings offer an amazing lifespan of 30-50 years even outdoors in harsh environments Usually more cost effective than glass DIY capability is very good for many cable railing applications What are the Most Transparent Railing Colors? In our experience the most transparent railing color is not a color at all. Bare stainless steel can actually be the most transparent color of all. Arguments can always be made for black railings at night, or certain colors in certain settings; but bare stainless is the most widely used. Other good choices for transparency are grey tones and earth tones in landscape settings. Bare stainless and metallic finishes, as well as light grey work great in coastal applications. Since 2009 San Diego Cable Railings has been furnishing transparent railings to a nationwide customer base of pros and DIYers. We have an online store, and preferred contractors who specialize in railing installation. Techniques to consider when installing railings involving dry decks, or irregular lipped decking. A drip edge is a metal flashing that is usually shaped like an L. The flashing is installed at the edge of a roof or dry deck, coated balcony etc. The drip edge directs water away from the fascia board and protect your home from damage. Drip edge flashings are required by most building codes. Much like a bullnose or lipped edge; a drip edge will create a projection which can interfere when connecting a railing post. Experienced deck builders will often lip the edge of wooden or composite decks for similar reasons to using a drip edge. The goal is always to move water out and away from the deck or roof fascia. Lipped or irregular edges can pose challenges for post installation; but there are some effective railing installation techniques used to approach these challenges. Notch Cutting for Posts, Top Mounted Railings, and Utilizing Post Standoffs One of the easiest ways to fascia mount railing posts to a lipped edge is to use a “notch cut”. The notch cut is not typically used for dry deck scenarios, but for stairs or lipped decking it works well. Installers simply notch the decking to the depth of the lip so the post mounts flush to the fascia. It should be considered that a notch cut could increase the chances of water being trapped in between the post and decking or fascia. Notches can be enlarged to allow for drainage and airflow in the gaps, or they can be cut tight and sealed in order to improve longevity. An effective notch cut can provide a seamless look and add extra rigidity by locking the post in multiple directions. Another effective way to avoid an irregular edge is by using a “standoff”. Post standoffs are basically shims that can be fabricated out of wood, composite or steel. The standoff member is sandwiched in between the post and deck; secured by mounting bolts, Welded standoffs offer an extremely stout connection by adding a mounting plate for steel posts; the thickness can be modified to push the post outside an irregular edge. Care should be taken to ensure the bolts selected are long enough to properly connect the post based on the thickness. Standoffs are just spacers, they do not provide structural support and should not be counted as embedment. Railing Installation Techniques forTop Mounted or Recessed Railing Posts If the application permits the use of top mounted railing posts, it is a very good way to avoid the fascia entirely. There are of course other considerations for top mounting; some decks do not have blocking or structural members for which to attach the posts. Other decks may have slopes or waterproof members that will not allow for penetration. However, for standard decks or new construction; blocking and top mounting works excellent. Level concrete decks, hardwood and composites are all great top mounting candidates. There are many different post configurations possible when considering a cable railing layout. One thing we get a lot of inquiries about is the use of 2 posts vs. a single post to turn corners. Here is a Q and A list of some frequently asked questions about corner post call outs with respect to cable railing systems: Why do cable railing systems use 2 posts when turning corners? -Quite simply a 2 post corner allows for a continuous cable to turn a corner without stopping and starting a new run. As illustrated in the photo above; the cables continue around the corner at a 45 degree angle through the posts. Are there benefits to using 2 posts vs. 1 post? -From a cost standpoint there are benefits to using 2 posts to turn a corner. The double post corner reduces the amount of necessary hardware that comes with breaking a cable run at a single corner post. Aesthetically, the preference is really up to the individual. Some customers like to see hardware or minimize the post count. Others prefer to minimize the hardware or the cost outweighs the aesthetic preference. Single Post Corner Aesthetic Which type of corner post design is stronger? -For a number of reasons the 2 post corner creates a stronger frame and connection. Using two posts will distribute the tension load over more surface area with twice the number of connections to the subfloor. A single post will actually experience twice the tension load in different directions when 2 separate runs of cable terminate on a single post corner. Which applications are good choices for a single post vs. two post corner? -Small spaces and interior railings will often benefit from, or even require the use of single posts. The photo above is a great illustration of a single post application. Another example could be a small “L” or “U” shaped section with short sides that would be cumbersome with too many posts. – Large decks and fences will more often utilize two posts in an effort to span single cables as far as possible to reduce cost. A double post can also be an effective way to break and start a new cable run when large spans exist and the installer must break the cable. Which type of corner is best for my design? By providing our sales staff with photos and/or measurements of your project we can recommend the best configuration for your railing system. Based on your preferences and some of the considerations in this article we can come up with a cost effective and attractive railing system for your home. Many of our potential customers are doing research about different railing types and witnessing a wide variation in costs associated with these systems. Cable and glass railing cost can vary based on a number of factors; this article provides some guidelines to help you understand some of the reasons for varying cost, and pricing guidelines for your project. The short answer to the cost comparison question “cable vs. glass” leans towards glass railings being more expensive than cable railings. Although this is not always the case, it is more common. Both glass railing cost factors and cable railing estimates can vary based on some of the following considerations: : -Interior vs. Exterior Applications -Frameless vs. framed glass or post/clamp -Stairways and Ramps vs. Level rail scenarios -Custom fabrication vs. modular railing systems -DIY and professional installations Readers should take note that many factors contribute to cost and that the information provided is based on cost averages of a variety of different railing jobs. Interior vs. Exterior Railing Cost Comparisons Interior railings will usually present a higher price point than exterior railings. The main reason for this is that as the lineal footage grows, the material cost per foot comes down. Interior jobs are smaller in scale but usually make up for it in complexity. Larger fences or deck rails will present a lower actual cost per foot despite a higher overall cost because of the sheer amount of lineal footage. Interior railings are often tricky; and the interior of a home presents more liability than something like an exterior fence job. Turnkey cost estimates for interior glass railings can range from $250 – $600 per lineal foot for labor and materials. Interior cable railing systems will often range from $180- $300 per foot for labor and materials. Almost all interior stair projects will require custom fabrication of some type due to angles and mounting challenges associated with stairs. Custom fabrication is on average more expensive than a modular “kit” railing system. Railings for exterior decks and fences are more cost effective to construct than interiors from a lineal footage standpoint. These installations often make better candidates for DIY projects than interiors. The average cost for exterior glass fences and railings can range from $200-$450 per lineal foot for labor and materials. Exterior cable railing systems will range from $150-$250 per lineal foot for labor and materials. Base shoe glass railing systems will often require thicker or laminated glass panels thus raising the costs associated. Pre fabricated railing systems will generally fall in to the lower end of the above mentioned price points, while custom fabrication will represent the higher end of the price points. Additional factors could include the use of stainless steel vs. mild steel or galvanized; engineered products vs. off the shelf or big box products. Jobs with complex angles or curves will often result in higher price points as well as the possibility for more design or engineering work associated. DIY Cable Railing and Glass Railing Systems DIY installation can present excellent cost saving opportunities for the consumer as labor costs often represent approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of total installed railing costs. Level rail scenarios like fences or straight rails are good opportunities too DIY. From a system standpoint we believe that cable railing kits are a far more commonly encountered way to pursue DIY railing projects than installing glass. However there are many tools and tutorials to assist DIY installers with cable or glass railing projects. Nationwide Shipping and Preferred Cable Railing Installation Powder coated stainless steel posts, Ipe’ hardwood and 1/8″ stainless steel cable infill combined for stunning results at one of our recent installations in Sherman Oaks, CA. The elevated location with mountain views and a gorgeous pool called for something elegant and transparent to blend into the existing landscape. Charcoal colored railing posts were selected for transparency and nighttime use; Ipe’ top rails were used to match the existing deck. This was a challenging installation due to the unique mounting situation, angles, and of course the remote setting for the project. The railing system was 100% pre-fabricated at our production facility in San Diego, CA. High quality installation and minor modifications were performed on site by the guys at SD Independent Construction. The project took a total 4 days on site to complete. Attachment Details- Welded mounting plates and concrete anchors were used for the masonry post attachment; creating a formidable barrier with the rigidity of a solid wall. Lag bolts were used for attaching posts to wooden framing. For top railings 2″x4″ Ipe’ hardwood timbers were chosen for their durability and beauty that will definitely stand the test of time. Type 316 Stainless Steel Cables for Transparency and Durability The beauty of stainless steel cable is that it often reflects its surroundings. We find this to be true in natural and water front settings. Cable railings provide a high end look that can be designed to look natural in landscape settings. Using a product like T316 stainless cable is a good idea on poolside decks with so many traditional pool builds now converting to saline (salt water) . Minimalist designs and products are in high demand. Our sales team receives requests on a daily basis for the most transparent and minimal railing frames and products we have to offer. Over the years we’ve built and tested all types of railing posts and frame systems in actual field conditions. This article aims to provide some information to our customers who want to utilize the most minimalist railing posts and hardware that any particular building application will safely permit. Our company offers a variety of different products and mounting systems with minimalist aesthetics in mind. Listed below are some of our minimalist railing products with descriptions: Flat Bar Cable Railing Posts- Possibly the least amount of visible obstruction from a vertical post; flat bar cable railing posts have an exceptionally minimal profile at 3/8″. Flat bar cable railing posts can also be called intermediate spreaders, pickets, or spreader posts. These posts can be alternated with 2″ structural posts to broaden viewing “windows” allowing for larger spacing in between standard posts. SDCR “ultra slim spreader posts” utilize welded connections making for a very rigid post despite their minimal profile. We have even seen our customers use them consecutively across a span of field posts while only using structural posts on the ends and corners for tension. We do not however, recommend the use of flat bar posts for any tension post. 1.5″ Stainless Steel Square Railing Posts 1.5″ square posts are an excellent option for both cable railing systems and glass railings. These posts can be capped with a low profile 1″x2″ top rail or even a standard 2″x4″. San Diego Cable Railings 1.5″ stainless steel posts can be used for glass panel railings by mechanically fastening “clips” or ” U channel” to the railing post with self tapping screws. Welded mounting connections ensure the ability to satisfy lateral loading requirements. This post system can be a great option for minimalist stair railings and can also satisfy a graspable railing requirement when utilizing 1″x2″ cap rail. Base Shoe for Glass Railings- Despite the fact that a base shoe is not exactly a railing post; it’s definitely worth a mention. Base shoes are used to secure glass panels via connection of the shoe to the base material (wall, deck surface, etc.). Base shoes are often constructed of mill finished aluminum which is lightweight and strong; allowing for free standing glass panels and absolute transparency. Shoe systems provide a safe support system for glass panels without the use of posts, clips or top railings. One caveat to the use of a base shoe could be the need for thicker glass panels. It is not recommended to use less than 3/8″ tempered glass panels and most commonly 1/2″ is called out for base shoe glass railing installations. Fully framed glass railing systems and clip systems will accommodate smaller 1/4″ tempered glass panels. We offer turnkey solutions for sales and preferred installation of cable and glass railing systems, products and DIY railing systems. Whether you’re building a new deck or performing an interior remodel, the chances are there will be railings involved! We get a lot of inquiries from customers about the difference between railing kits and custom fabrication. Each job is so unique and some applications are better for each perspective railing type. In this blog we hope to help our readers understand the differences between cable railing kits and custom railing systems. Cable Railing Kits are Cost Effective One of the benefits of using a railing kit is the cost factor. Pre-made products that are pre-packaged cost less to produce than custom components. In many cases cable railing kits will offer the fastest lead times, meaning the parts are readily available to ship. Stock colors and DIY cable railing hardware make choosing and installing your railings a breeze. Other benefits to choosing a cable railing kit: No special tools required for cable fittings Pre-engineered products with standardized specifications Great for level deck railings and patio projects Great for level fencing In many cases cable railing kits do not require professional installation Custom Railing Systems for Stairways The most common situation for utilizing a custom railing system is when constructing stairs. Almost every stairway we encounter is different, resulting in rise/run differential and varying angles. Multiple turns, level changes and custom mounting situations are also common calls for custom railing fabrication. Interior stairways often call for complex design aesthetics, custom colors and material selections. In many cases a custom railing will be best handled or even require a trained professional. Complex angles and finish solutions can be difficult for novice installers; in addition any mistakes can be costly. Often a designer or architect will call for a scaled down “minimalist” aesthetic that may require engineering or custom calculations in order to satisfy current building codes. Some other custom railing considerations may include: Custom coating solutions, polishing, brushing Curves On site welding requirements Multiple starts and stops Sloped or irregular surfaces, masonry and wall mounting scenarios Turnkey Cable and Glass Railing Solutions San Diego Cable Railings is a full service fabricator and distributor of cable and glass railing systems. A cable railing system is a collection of individual components that are assembled to make a complete railing frame and infill. There are many ways to accomplish this; and even more ways to finish the material. In order to keep it simple we will discuss a few of the most popular material and finish options for cable railing systems. Because cable and glass railings utilize similar framing systems; these options can apply to both railing types. 4 Popular Finish Options for Cable Railing Systems Mirror or Polished Finish– A polished finish is a common stainless steel treatment that leaves the metal reflective like a mirror. It is a durable and attractive look on metal, however it can be unforgiving when damaged. Mirror finish has been used on sailboat railings and hardware for many decades because of the durability it offers. From a cost standpoint, a mirror finish is on the more expensive side of steel finishes. Oils, Stains and Painted Finishes– When we talk about a stained finish we are almost always referring to a wooden product. Stains and oils preserve the natural woodgrain look with varying levels of tint and transparency. In addition, a penetrating oil or paint will extend the lifespan and add to the durability of wood products. It’s important to select specific wood finishes for different types of soft and hardwoods. Some are more difficult to penetrate and softer woods may require more coats. Hardwoods and hardwood finishes are preferred for cable railing applications. Powder Coated Finishes- One of the most common finishes for exterior metals is a powder coated finish. In short, powder coat is a high temperature baked on shell that preserves and protects metal surfaces. Powder coating is versatile and cost effective, with hundreds of colors to choose from. A powder coated finish can be smooth or textured with multiple sheen variants available. Mill Finish and Knock Down Finishes– If you like the look of smooth bare metal then a mill finish is a great choice. Mill finishes are smooth and clean, but without sheen, consistent grain or polish. Sometimes mill finishes may contain swirls by design or they be graded by a grit number. The higher the number, the smoother the finish. Mill finished steel can also be clear coated if desired. Upgrade Your Stairs by Replacing a Pony Wall One of our recent installation projects showcases the amazing transformation of a standard set of stairs into a gorgeous entry. Wall removal projects are a growing trend which we are seeing more and more frequently. An interior stair renovation like this one can make a big impact on the appearance of an older home. Our customers were able to create a beautiful focal point with less time and effort than a kitchen or bathroom remodel. So what does it take to renovate your stairs and what are some of the likely benefits in doing so? Here’s a few bullet points about the project scope: Removal of existing wall sections to a desired height Adding retrofit blocking and a new wall cap Drywall and paint touch ups Installation of a new “pre fabricated” railing system by SDCR Replacing a pony wall with pre-fabricated railing products make a project like this pretty DIY friendly. A bit of light carpentry, drywall repair and painting experience is required in order to remove the wall. A few other items to consider about this renovation could include: Are there any electrical outlets or wiring in the wall? Is the wall used for support or structural reasons? Is floor repair necessary upon removal of the pony wall? Is a separate grab rail needed in order to be code compliant? Modern Railings Create Space and Add Value to Your Home Removing a wall from your homes interior will increase the amount of light and also make the space feel larger. The clean aesthetic of cable railings can add a modern or contemporary touch. Adding wooden top railings to match existing flooring is also a nice way to add warmth and also tie the new railings into the existing structure. A stairway renovation like the one photographed is a small scale project that provides large returns. A pre-fabricated cable railing system like the one in the photos can be put together by our team in as little as 1-2 weeks. A simple photograph with dimensions is enough to begin the process. Stairs may require a bit more measuring in order to calculate a correct angle for any custom stair posts. All of the hardware and cable fittings are included. San Diego Cable Railings offers full service sales and preferred installation of cable and glass railing systems. Our pros can estimate railing projects in 1-2 business days and our product turn around times are some of the best in the business. Give us a call or visit the quote request page today.
